Nintendo had at one point talked about investing in their online infrastructure. To be clear, that is a game that has 100 players on a given map. But I have played games like Hell Let Loose (on a dedicated server) and have had a pretty smooth experience even playing with a friend in the UK. Now I don't know what people consider "Top tier connections." My own connection is certainly not top tier. ![]() Some of the folks responded to this saying "Dedicated servers are great for people with top tier connections, but bad for people without." Harada responded saying: "Dedicated server is not good for fighting games. The question asked was "Will fighting games ever support dedicated servers to reduce lag?" And for people that think the online issues are limited to Smash (which uses a different kind of netcode), games like Mario Kart 8 have just as much of an issue.Īs an aside? Katsuhiro Harada (responsible for Tekken) replied to a comment asking about dedicated servers. Now? You pay for the same kind of peer to peer you had on those other systems and a handful/trickle of some NES/SNES Games. It was tolerable then because well.Nintendo didn't charge for online multiplayer. But again now that Nintendo is taking in monthly revenue from subs? One would think the costs of operating and maintaining a server would then be offset. The hurdle for dedicated servers would be distance and cost. Especially if you throw items into the mix. That's a lot of shit happening on screen at once. But let's remember Smash supports 8 player smash. Well.if the number of players was just 2-4 players you might get by with peer to peer. Some have debated whether peer to peer or dedicated servers would be best for something like Smash. If they're not going to do that, the least they could do is make it free instead of charging money for a service that barely works. But it can't be that hard or expensive for them to have online multiplayer that works properly. Yes, I know, expecting Nintendo to give a shit about us is asking for far too much these days. And when I load the online smash, several times a day it kicks me back to the home menu with some kind of connection error. Why can't they just implement dedicated servers or at least proper servers that don't lag? Not to mention preferred rules don't actually work, and I keep getting put in team matches (which I abhor) instead of 4-player smash like I set it to. But by today's online gaming standards, that's way too fucking much. It's such a cash cow for them yet they can't spare some cash to fix the horrible lag for the online multiplayer? For the record, no it's not MY Internet connection, since most of my matches don't lag, maybe only 1 in every 5 or 6 of them do.
